Boutique Hotels in Jamaica

A beautiful Jamaica sunset (Flickr: runkalicious)The island of Jamaica is full of lodging options, from inexpensive to simply exorbitant; and offers a bevy of choices that include mom and pop tiny inns to the behemoth resorts of international acclaim.

Want a place somewhere in between?

Whether borading flights to Jamaica for some relaxation or exploration, boutique hotels scattered around the island compliment the flora, fauna and, of course, stunning vistas as far as the eye can see.

The Caves: Set atop limestone cliffs on Jamaica’s west coast of Negril, the hotel offers an intimate and beautiful place to relax when not spending time exploring the area (or partying at any of the town’s many hot spots).

For dinner, head to the intimate private dining cave where guests can savor Jamaican cuisine under twinkling candle light, then stop in to The Caves’ Blackwell Rum Bar. The bar, set inside limestone, is a grotto with stunning views. To unwind, book a treatment at the Aveda Amenity Spa, or dip into either the plunge or salt water pools. Plus, the beach is nearby – a gorgeous seven-mile stretch.

Hotel Mocking Bird Hill: Located in Port Antonio, this 10 room hotel is perfect for those looking for a green place to sleep. Perched on a hill on the northeast coast, Hotel Mocking Bird Hill offers complimentary afternoon tea, views of the Blue Mountains, along with a shuttle to Fisherman’s Cove Beach. Art plays a large part at this hotel, too. There’s an open-air sculpture garden and Gallery Carriacou, which features work by the innkeeper along with other local artists. The restaurant is all organic and features slow-cooking. From the hotel, guests can explore the rainforest, head down to the beach, or just chill out on property by lounging in one of the hammocks or lounge chairs in the garden.

Jake’s Hotel: While the hotel is located on Jamaica’s South Coast at the more secluded Treasure Beach, Jake’s has gained a reputation for its whimsical and hippie vibe. It offers art classes and yoga and has named all of its rooms like Starfish & Jellyfish, Cowrie, Cockles and more. All of the rooms, which resemble upscale Caribbean shacks, offer views of the ocean or garden. Choose from a room, cottage or villa – there is no wrong choice. Jake’s offers nanny service, stocked picnic baskets for sunset strolls, a private beach, pool, two restaurants and even a holistic spa.

Rockhouse Hotel: It’s been ranked by Travel + Leisure as one of the 500 best hotels in the world (2010) and with good cause. On the cliffs of the Pristine Cove in Negril, the thatched villas are romantic and unique. Rockhouse has 34 rooms, some of which have private outdoor showers, lend itself to the vacation vibe. There’s a spa, yoga and water sports to enjoy. Plus, there are plenty of paths to go explore the beauty of the area.

Kanopi House: Another green hotel on the list, this hotel is actually four tree houses, all uniquely decorated and set in the jungle. There’s a communal tree house with day beds and jungle views, as well as a restaurant. With in-room spa treatments and access to the famed Blue Lagoon nearby, there may not be a need to even hit the beach with a visit to the tree houses.

  • I wake to banging doors and loud conversation. I step out into the hallway and it appears Hansel and Gretel were here as a path of Cheerios leads to the loud room in question. I walk into the elevator and what do we have here? Sopping wet teens in their swim trucks and no shoes create a slippery mess for the next elevator occupant. I wander down to the hotel lobby and it appears a group has decided to take over the space for an in-hotel party. I squeeze past one of the partygoers to grab a cup of coffee included in my room rate and receive several glances like I just crashed the party uninvited. I’m dealing with all of those annoying people you meet in a hotel....read more

  • After spending several months in Italy, I was skeptical Portugal would amaze me at the dinner table. To make matters worse for the country, I had just come back from Spain, no slouch in the food department either. Amidst Italy, Spain and France, Portugal’s drinks and dishes don’t always make it on to the foodie’s radar. And after a few bites and drinks at an old tavern in Viseu, I was hooked. I was missing Portugal as a food and drink destination. If you are headed to Portugal or need a push to consider going, a few meals and glasses of wine prove an empire of discovery and exploration did this country’s palette right....read more
