Berlin is a wonderfully vibrant city with so much to offer visitors. From historic sites to street food, here are my top five reasons to visit beautiful Berlin. History Berlin’s history is absolutely fascinating. Visitor’s with be enthralled by historic sites such as the Brandenburg Gate (the former gate to the city, built in the late 18th century), Checkpoint Charlie (the best-known Berlin Wall crossing area between East and West Berlin), and the Berlin Wall Memorial at Bernauer Strasse. Street Food I fancy myself a street food aficionado, and, in my humble opinion, Berlin has some of the best street food in Europe. From currywurst (pork sausage covered with a combination of ketchup or tomato paste mixed with curry and served on a crusty roll) to glüwein (spiced red wine prepared with cinnamon sticks, vanilla pods, cloves, orange peel and sugar and served hot), there is plenty of fare to warm your body and soul on a chilly Berlin day. Christmas Markets Around the holidays, a variety of large and small Christmas markets pop up around Berlin (most begin near the end of November). Here you can browse handmade wares and enjoy fresh-baked holiday goodies. Some of the most famous christkindlmarkts (Christmas markets) are those at Gendarmenmarkt Square, Potsdamer Platz, and Charlottenburg Castle. Art From historic museums to street art, Berlin has a thriving and diverse arts scene. Because artists can live relatively cheaply and find affordable gallery space in Berlin, this city has become a European arts mecca over the last decade. For a quintessentially Berlin art experience, check out the Kunsthaus Tacheles. Flea Markets Berliners and tourists alike love to browse the flohmarkts (flea markets) located throughout the city on various days of the week. Some of the most popular flohmarkts are Flohmarkt am Mauerpark, EuroFlohmarkt, and Flohmarkt am Arkonaplatz.
