Whether you’re going to London for the 2012 Summer Games, or heading there after the athletes have come and gone, you won’t want to miss this city’s excellent street food options. London is a multicultural city and this is largely reflected in its street food. Here are my top five recommendations for tasty treats, both savory and sweet.
Pies and Tarts
An easy treat to eat on the go, pies and tarts come in both savory and sweet versions. I recommend something quintessentially British, like a pork pie or a custard tart. Tarts are served all over the city, but some of the best can be found at Eat My Pies at White Cross Market and Broadway Market (Eat My Pies).
This traditional Spanish snack is a long fried doughnut served fresh out of the fryer. You can top them with a cinnamon and sugar mix or dip them in dark Spanish chocolate. Check out one of the Churros Garcia stands at Broadway Market, Real Food Market and Portobello Market (Churros Garcia).
The Vietnamese comfort food, pho is a delicious soup made from a light broth, noodles, steamed and fresh vegetables, basil, cilantro, lime, onion, beansprouts and meat (usually beef or chicken). Nothing tastes better on an overcast London day. For some of the best pho in the city, try Pho Café (Pho Cafe).
Pizza and Flatbread
There are a lot of food trucks and stands that serve pizza in London. Do yourself a favor and head to one that doesn’t serve the same old. Homeslice, with stands at King’s Cross and Broadway Market Schoolyard, prides itself on innovative combinations (chorizo and arugula, anyone?) that will keep you coming back for more. (Homeslice Pizza)
Tasty K, located on Brixton Station Road, serves up traditional Guyanese Roti, which is a paper thin flatbread that is folded and layered like a pastry. Roti is served with various types of meat and vegetarian curries for dipping or other proteins like fried fish. Do yourself a favor and order an extra roti. Trust me.
