A day after President Barack Obama announced the death of Osama bin Laden at the hands of United States Special Forces, the US government issued a travel warning for Americans living and traveling abroad.
Fears of retaliation from splintered militant groups prompted the government to warn Americans not to stray far from their homes and hotels.
Citizens are also urged to avoid large gatherings and demonstrations of any kind, especially in areas experiencing political or social unrest.
American diplomatic facilities around the world remain on high alert.
The government is encouraging Americans traveling abroad to monitor local media reports and sign up for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, a service which relays security updates regularly.
