Head to Warmer Weather This Winter

For those who have the winter blues, or think they might get them, there are a few places this winter to head in America to get some Vitamin D.

With cheap flights and temps pushing the short-sleeve mindset, there are places to head this winter that require being free of the layers, heavy winter coat and boots.

LAS VEGAS: With temperatures during the day in the 50s and 60s during most of the winter, and sunshine nearly a guarantee (unless you come in January when there is a threat of rain), Vegas is a good escape from the frigid temps north and east.

At night it gets cold, but those warm winter days make it worth a little bundle in the evening. Plus, the winter months in Vegas are less crowded than spring and summer, and, unless there is a massive convention in town, hotel rates are less, too.

PHOENIX: For even warmer weather, head to the arid climate in Phoenix. With winter averages in the 60s and 70s, the city and its surroundings are perfect for outdoor activities like hiking, biking and golfing. If you plan on visiting this winter, be sure to make your air and hotel reservations early. Because of its gorgeous winter weather, it is a popular pick for people escaping the snow.

KEY WEST: Crystal water. Soft sand. Key West (and the other Florida Keys) are a popular spot for winter vacations. And, who can blame anyone? With daytime temps hovering in the high 70s in the heart of winter, kicking back is easy on this lush island. Another popular locale for snowbirds, reserve lodging early.

AUSTIN: Spend the day soaking up the sun along the river in Austin, or head out and take in the city's vibrant local music scene. Temps in this part of Texas stick around the mid-60s.

LOS ANGELES: While you can't dip your toes in the Pacific in the winter (unless you are suited up), Los Angeles is a great place to chase away the winter blahs. With year-round flowering foliage, palm trees that nearly touch the sky, and mild temps, LA should be on anyone's list in the winter.

  • I wake to banging doors and loud conversation. I step out into the hallway and it appears Hansel and Gretel were here as a path of Cheerios leads to the loud room in question. I walk into the elevator and what do we have here? Sopping wet teens in their swim trucks and no shoes create a slippery mess for the next elevator occupant. I wander down to the hotel lobby and it appears a group has decided to take over the space for an in-hotel party. I squeeze past one of the partygoers to grab a cup of coffee included in my room rate and receive several glances like I just crashed the party uninvited. I’m dealing with all of those annoying people you meet in a hotel....read more

  • After spending several months in Italy, I was skeptical Portugal would amaze me at the dinner table. To make matters worse for the country, I had just come back from Spain, no slouch in the food department either. Amidst Italy, Spain and France, Portugal’s drinks and dishes don’t always make it on to the foodie’s radar. And after a few bites and drinks at an old tavern in Viseu, I was hooked. I was missing Portugal as a food and drink destination. If you are headed to Portugal or need a push to consider going, a few meals and glasses of wine prove an empire of discovery and exploration did this country’s palette right....read more
