Las Vegas File: Miss Nevada, Alana Lee

There are plenty of pretty faces in Las Vegas. But, Alana Lee, this year’s Miss Nevada, is far more than just that.

Lee, a native of Las Vegas, has taken on patriotism as her platform as she prepares to compete in Miss America.

Prior to the national competition, the beauty will travel and talk to Americans, with the hopes of rallying them to get out and vote in every election, and to encourage people to get more involved in politics.

A seasoned traveler, Lee attended school in Ireland, Monaco, and China, the latter of which she spent time teaching English. She’s currently at senior at Dixie State College in St. George, Utah, a scenic drive up I-15 from Las Vegas.

We sat down with Miss Nevada to learn more about her thoughts on being a Las Vegas local in this week's Las Vegas File.

1.) You've lived in Las Vegas all of your life? What's your favorite place to go to get away from The Strip?

When I want to escape city life I can usually be found at home. As boring as that may sound, it is my little refuge from glitz, glam and expectations from anyone. I get to kick back, relax and enjoy myself while watching the news and organizing my calendar and appearances.

2.) Places have come and gone in Las Vegas the past few years. What is one place you are glad has weathered the changes to this town?

One destination I have grown fond of is La Casa de Shenandoah, Wayne Newton's ranch. Wayne has been a Las Vegas icon since the 1960's and has generated lots of public interest in his "ranch among the city lights" since he began its construction. I have been lucky enough to work closely with Wayne during the past year to create his official documentary and am grateful for my time spent at his relaxing oasis. It's a breath of fresh air in the middle of sin city!

3.) What is your favorite place to go shopping for clothing for competitions?

I love shopping at Neiman Marcus [Fashion Show Mall]! I was fortunate enough to find my Miss America interview dress, heels, jewelry and several cocktail dresses there. Plus, who can resist indulging in one of their chocolate chip cookies while on a good shopping spree?

4.) If you could only dine at one restaurant on The Strip for the rest of your life, what would it be?

I would choose to eat at Grand Lux Cafe at the Venetian. There are so many options on the menu that I'm confident I would be able to satisfy my ever changing palate and random cravings.

5.) When you want to do something outdoors-y, where do you head?

I head to Mount Charleston or Red Rock to go hiking. I don't get to go as often as I'd like, but it’s always rejuvenating.

6.) What's the biggest misconception you think people have about Las Vegans?

Although the Strip is a fun place to visit, it’s not where we live and conduct all of our business. Many people I have met in my travels believe Vegas is an unfit place to raise a family due to this notion. However, there are many communities around the valley that provide good and wholesome living circumstances for families.

7.) You've traveled pretty extensively for school and volunteer work. What's the longest flight you've been on? What tip would you have for other people on a long flight like that?

When I flew to China I was on the airplane for nearly 17 hours! Thankfully, I have learned a few tricks that make traveling more comfortable. I always bring a pair of socks and a blanket with me because planes always seem too cold for comfort! I also bring a candy bar with me to counteract all the salt from the peanuts and pretzels. Haha!

8.) Do you have a special local place you like to take visitors?

There is a great Vietnamese restaurant in Chinatown called Pho So 1 that I have been going to since I was eight. I like to give my visitors a taste of the local Asian culture that I value so much.

9.) It's almost Halloween. What do you enjoy doing on Halloween in Las Vegas?

Trick or Treating of course! I usually go with my nieces and nephews in hopes of reaping some of their rewards at the end of the night! My family also gets together to eat chili and drink hot chocolate even though the weather can still be warm at that time of year.

10.) I love Las Vegas because ...

It is filled with opportunity despite our many hardships. I honestly believe that Las Vegas offers as much opportunity as you are willing to create for yourself. There are many wonderful people in this town with great minds and great hearts. Tapping into this reserve can work as a catalyst of success for ambitious folks in an industry. This town is what you make of it!

  • I wake to banging doors and loud conversation. I step out into the hallway and it appears Hansel and Gretel were here as a path of Cheerios leads to the loud room in question. I walk into the elevator and what do we have here? Sopping wet teens in their swim trucks and no shoes create a slippery mess for the next elevator occupant. I wander down to the hotel lobby and it appears a group has decided to take over the space for an in-hotel party. I squeeze past one of the partygoers to grab a cup of coffee included in my room rate and receive several glances like I just crashed the party uninvited. I’m dealing with all of those annoying people you meet in a hotel....read more

  • After spending several months in Italy, I was skeptical Portugal would amaze me at the dinner table. To make matters worse for the country, I had just come back from Spain, no slouch in the food department either. Amidst Italy, Spain and France, Portugal’s drinks and dishes don’t always make it on to the foodie’s radar. And after a few bites and drinks at an old tavern in Viseu, I was hooked. I was missing Portugal as a food and drink destination. If you are headed to Portugal or need a push to consider going, a few meals and glasses of wine prove an empire of discovery and exploration did this country’s palette right....read more
