OneTravel Animal of the Week: The Loggerhead Sea Turtle

OneTravel Animal of the Week: The Loggerhead Sea TurtleLoggerhead sea turtles are known to make a big splash (both figuratively and literally). Here’s what you need to know about the state saltwater reptile of Florida.

Natural habitat: The saltwaters of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, as well as the Mediterranean Sea.

Protection status: Endangered due to pollution, shrimp trawling, and development in nesting areas

Population: Unknown

Size: The average adult turtle measures approximately 90 cm (35 in) and weighs 135 kg (298 lbs).

Life span: between 47 and 67 years

Diet: omnivorous, with a diet consisting primarily of bottom-dwelling invertebrates like jellyfish, conchs, crabs, and fish

Personality: One may be the loneliest number, but these sea turtles need their space –a lot of it, for that matter. Courtship and mating are generally the only times they interact with each other.

Fun fact: Sea turtles are no slow pokes in the ocean. They can move through the water as quickly as 15 mi (24 km) per hour.

  • The world famous and one of a kind Malt Whisky Trail in Scotland passes through seven Speyside working distilleries, as well as a historic distillery and Britain's only cooperage. Though hardly inclusive of the numerous distilleries in the Speyside area, the trailserves as an excellent spine through the region. Indeed, any visit to all of the venues along this stretch of green Scottish countryside would result in plenty of knowledge about a Scottish and a wealth of memories....read more
