Where to Get Your Daredevil on in Sin City

Skyjump at Stratosphere (CC Flickr photo credit: Matt Belton)It takes a certain person to put down $1,000 worth of chips on a black, then watch the Roulette wheel spin their fate. And, it takes an entirely different sort of person to close their eyes and take a leap out of an airplane.

For the adrenaline junkies boarding flights to Las Vegas who get more excitement out of wagers of life or death (or just some serious fun) than wagers of money, Sin City has plenty of options to get the heart racing and the blood flowing.

Vegas Indoor Skydiving: For those not ready to take the jump from an airplane, Vegas Indoor Skydiving offers a different kind of skydiving experience. After a quick outfitting in appropriate gear, "divers head to an orientation that goes over the basics to avoid injuries.

Indoor skydivers are then put into a cushioned wind tunnel with a propeller at the bottom. When the propeller turns on, winds kick up to 120 miles per hour, shooting people into the air to experience a skydive (just the opposite direction).

Skydive Las Vegas: If Indoor Skydiving doesn’t get your pulse pounding, try out Skydive Las Vegas. Nevada’s highest sky dive – jumping from 12,799 feet above ground level – is a jump from a 2009 PAC-750XL skydiving plane. Jumpers are treated to some of the most spectacular views in Nevada, including Lake Mead, Hoover Dam, Valley of Fire, the Las Vegas Strip, Mt. Charleston and Red Rocky Canyon.

Stratosphere’s Sky Jump: There are plenty of thrills atop the Stratosphere. Depending on your poison, some rides are guaranteed to get you screaming more than others. The Sky Jump is one that is sure to get that adrenaline pumping. Take a step off the ledge on the Stratosphere’s 108th floor and enjoy 855 feet of a controlled free fall. Thrill-seekers are harnessed in and attached to cables as they jump.

Exotic Driving Experience: Dream of racing Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Porsches, Aston Martins or other exotic rides? Las Vegas has you covered. Over at the Las Vegas Speedway, you can do just that. Go through a driving instruction course and then get onto the track for five laps with an instructor guiding you around every twist and turn from the passenger seat, as you race around the track.

Sky Combat Ace: From loops, stalls, spins and dog fights, Sky Combat Ace lets you get a chance to fly a two-seater Extra 300 LC fighter plane with a fighter pilot instructing you. From 1,500 feet above the ground and at speeds of up to 220 miles per hour, you can choose from three different flying options – Top Gun, After Burner or Sky Combat. Times range from 20 to 50 minutes in the air, depending on the flying package.

  • I wake to banging doors and loud conversation. I step out into the hallway and it appears Hansel and Gretel were here as a path of Cheerios leads to the loud room in question. I walk into the elevator and what do we have here? Sopping wet teens in their swim trucks and no shoes create a slippery mess for the next elevator occupant. I wander down to the hotel lobby and it appears a group has decided to take over the space for an in-hotel party. I squeeze past one of the partygoers to grab a cup of coffee included in my room rate and receive several glances like I just crashed the party uninvited. I’m dealing with all of those annoying people you meet in a hotel....read more

  • After spending several months in Italy, I was skeptical Portugal would amaze me at the dinner table. To make matters worse for the country, I had just come back from Spain, no slouch in the food department either. Amidst Italy, Spain and France, Portugal’s drinks and dishes don’t always make it on to the foodie’s radar. And after a few bites and drinks at an old tavern in Viseu, I was hooked. I was missing Portugal as a food and drink destination. If you are headed to Portugal or need a push to consider going, a few meals and glasses of wine prove an empire of discovery and exploration did this country’s palette right....read more
